“Winning brings confidence” says Athlone boss Fortune

Athlone manager Colin Fortune

Manager Colin Fortune has seen Athlone Town put back-to-back victories together to begin the 2017 season in style. His club sit proudly at the top of the First Division table alongside UCD after two games.

They went down to the south-east to take on Wexford FC on Friday night and came away with a 2-1 win.

Fortune said, “It was a great result for us to get in Wexford Friday evening. We have been struggling recently in getting results away from home so it was pleasing that we started this campaign with a good away win.”

“The players have been working very hard and it is great to see the hard work paying off.”

“Although not the best of performances, as a team we really had to work hard to get the result.”

“The pleasing thing about Friday night was that with the difficult weather conditions it was going to be a game in which we would have to work hard as a team to grind out a result and with some new players in the team it was great to see how hard they worked and how organised we were.”

“It has been a good start to the season and winning brings confidence. After both the result against waterford in the first game and after Fridays game in Wexford confidence in the Camp is now high.”

“We are now looking forward to our next match Friday evening against our local rivals, Longford Town where there should be a great local support and a great atmosphere in the stadium.”

With Longford’s disappointing result at home to Cobh Ramblers, a 3-1 defeat, fresh in the players minds, it’s sure to be a very spicy occasion.
