What’s going on at Athlone Town football club? That’s the question being asked by not only the club’s supporters, but all League of Ireland fans across the country.
This morning the Irish Sun reported that coach Ricardo Monsanto contacted the newspaper yesterday to say that he was the manager at the club, and not Colin Fortune.
According to the paper Monsanto said, “Colin Fortune was manager last season. This season, I’m here to manage the football team and I bring my technical team.”
“He is a good guy but he isn’t manager of the team.”
Fortune responded with, “Up to training last night I was the manager of the football club. Unless he knows something I don’t.”
After the club’s superb start to the season, with successive victories over Waterford FC and Wexford FC, this is the last thing that the fans wanted. With the Midlands Derby clash with Longford Town coming up on Friday night, expects some fireworks both on and off the pitch.
Athlone Town officials have yet to comment on the situation today.
