First Division Player of the week – David O’Sullivan (Longford Town)

Longford Town striker David O’Sullivan is our SSE Airtricity League First Division ‘Player of the week’ after his hat-trick helped Longford win the midlands El Classico against Athlone Town 3-0.

After a huge disappointing 3-1 defeat to Cobh Ramblers last week, this result gives the club ahuge lift, especially the manner it was achieved.

O’Sullivan told us, “We knew going into the game that we needed a win after our dissapointing start to the season.”

“That was the main aim and to go out and win 3-0 in the derby was great and will hopefully kickstart a good run for us now. We rode our luck at times, but created a lot of chances and fully deserved the three points.”

“On a personal level, I hadn’t scored in the opening two games so it was great to get off the mark last night, and then to go and get the hat-trick made it that bit sweeter.”

“I can’t take all the credit though, the team effort was brillant, we kept a clean sheet and I got very good deliveries for all my goals. All in all, a very positive result and we need to kick on from here now.”

Longford manager Alan Matthews told the Longford Leader after the game, “We played well and should have scored a few more goals. What we got was a positive reaction to what was a disappointing result against Cobh last weekend. We kept a clean sheet as well so there are a lot of positives. We defended well as a team. Every single one of them defended well when they had to.”

Longford will he looking to put two wins together next Saturday night when they host Cabinteely at the City Calling Stadium, with a 7.30 kick-off time.
