First Division Player of the week – Christopher ‘Kaka’ McCarthy (Cobh Ramblers)

Christopher ‘Kaka’ McCarthy is our SSE Airtricity League First Division Player of the week, after his performance in Cobh Ramblers 5-1 win over Athlone Town on Saturday.

McCarthy 20, was only on the pitch for for just over an hour, but in that time was hugely influential. It was his pass who set up Ross Mann to score, only for him to be fouled for the opening penalty, which he converted. The midfielder, who’s also the club’s captain, scored twice in three minutes (both from the penalty spot).

Cobh, who are unbeaten this season, went top of the First Division table with the win. Two wins and two draws have Stephen Henderson’s men one point clear of both big-spending Waterford and UCD. They are extremely unfortunate not to have four wins from four games, but for 2 last kick of the game goals against both Wexford (which was very contentious) and Shelbourne.

Kaka, as he is affectionately known, is fast becoming Cobh’s talisman, and if his performances continue to improve, it will be hard for Cobh to hold onto him in the long-term.

His above tweet shows how mature the young midfielder is, more concerned with missing the chance to keep a clean sheet than celebrating his 2 goals.
