Ryan McBride is our unanimous SSE Airtricity League Premier Division Player of the Week. The one-club man, and Captain of Derry, tragically passed away on Sunday but his performances will never be forgotten.
Ryan scored Derry’s third goal in their 3-1 victory over Champions Dundalk on Monday night, a goal which ultimately proved decisive as it stopped Dundalk getting back into the game.
And on Saturday he captained the club for, what was the very last time, as Derry beat a stubborn Drogheda United 4-0 in Maginn Park.
This season, Derry were probably seen by many observers as being a team who would struggle to maintain a title challenge. However Kenny Shiels men, along with the leadership skills of McBride, were showing supporters and critics alike a determined steel along with no-end of talent, that they could indeed be a force in this season’s title race.
Ryan only ever wanted to play for his home-town team Derry City, and he did it with style. May he rest in peace
