Future is bright for Harps youngster Doherty

18 year-old midfielder Gareth Doherty is a young man who’s making quite a name for himself at Premier Division side Finn Harps.

He was in manager Ollie Horgan’s First-team squad on a couple of occasions as a 16 year-old and has recently made the bench for the club’s EA Sports Cup tie against Cockhill Celtic, which they won 3-1.

This season he’s been turning out for the clubs U-19’s, scoring twice in their opening fixture, a 2-1 win over Monaghan/Cavan. He scored another brace last weekend in their 3-1 victory over Longford Town.

We caught up with the young midfielder after the game. He told us, “We’re very happy with the win today as Longford is always a tough place to go. They’re a good team with some dangerous players so we knew we had to be on top of our game.”

“I was happy with my two goals. The first just dropped to me and I volleyed it on my left foot, and the second was a free kick so I was happy with that, but it was all about the team performance and we dug in well as a team.”

“I’m really enjoying my football at harps, with both the U-19’s and the first team. Hopefully we can push on with the U-19’s and go one better than the semi final last year, and hopefully the first team can keep picking up points in the premier division which is a very tough league.”

We also spoke to Under 19 head coach Joe Boyle, and he said of the young striker, “Gareth has started the season well and was on the bench for the first team in the League Cup game. If he continues in this form he will find himself in that position more often.”
