Cork’s winning streak continues

Karl Sheppard scores the opener from distance

Cork City made it 9 League wins in a row after a 2-0 win over Bohemians at Dalymount Park last night in front of a crowd of 2,200 people.

Goals from Karl Sheppard, his fifth of the season, and a late strike from Garry Buckley has John Caulfield’s men a whopping nine points clear of champions Dundalk after their 3-1 defeat to Bray Wanderers.

While it was another victory, Bohemians were a tough nut to crack, as the outcome wasn’t decided until three minutes from the end.

We spoke to both Gearoid Morrissey and goalscorer Garry Buckley after the win.

Gearoid Morrissey said, “Yeah it’s a good start for us but we’re just taking it game by game and focussing on that. I think that’s the best thing to do when in a long season.”

“To be fair it wasn’t our best performance but we never stopped working as hard as we could. I think when you do that even in games your not particularly playing well in, it gives you the bit of grit you need to win games, and thankfully we have the quality in this team to score when we get the chance.”

“Sheps goal was an absolute peach, and will probably be a goal of the season contender, which is deserved with the form he’s been in since pre-season. You can always rely on bucks to pitch in with a couple of goals as he has that in the locker.”

On his own play this season Morrissey said, “I think I’ve started well enough and i’m trying to get among the goals a bit more, so getting a bit further forward is what I try to do as much as I can. John Caulfield is always telling me to push on and drive at teams so it’s been good so far.”

Garry Buckley

Goalscorer Garry Buckley said, “Tonight’s game wasn’t our best performance by any means, not even close, but we got what we came for and that’s the three points. Every away game in this league is tough and tonight was no different.”

On his goal Garry said, “My goal came from the work rate of Seani, chasing down defenders all day long.  People talk about his goals but what they don’t realise is his work rate for the team is phenomenal as well. He squared it for me and it was a bit high so I had to adjust and hooked it in off my thigh.”

“I’m pleased with the goal. I go into every game looking to score. I feel I have got goals in me. As long as I’m contributing to us gettin the theee points every week I’m happy.”
