Galway United winger Gary Shanahan is this week’s SSE Airtricity League Premier Division Player of the Week.
His goal in added time on Friday evening was probably the most important goal over the weekend. United, winless in the league this season, were in danger of being detached at the foot of the Premier Division table.
However, with the game tied at 1-1, Shanahan found himself in space on the right-hand side of the Dundalk penalty area. He let fly on Gary Rogers goal, but his effort took a deflection to help it past the stranded keeper. The stands in Eamonn Deacy Park were rocking after the goal, including the President Michael D Higgins.
Shanahan said afterwards, “It broke to me on the edge of the box and my strike took a bit of a deflection on its way, but you need that bit of luck at times. All the lads put in a tough shift and we got our rewards in the end.”
The result, followed by their victory over Sligo Rovers in the EA Sports Cup quarter-final on Monday, sees United’s season take a huge upswing.
