Frenchman Chris Rodrigues is our SSE Airtricity League First Division Player of the Week following his performance for Athlone Town in their 2-1 win over Cobh Ramblers.
Ramblers came into the game at the summit of the First Division table, but left with nothing as crisis club Athlone Town left their troubles behind them to produce a fantastic performance.
Rodrigues is fast becoming a fan favourite, and did himself no hard with his two goals.
His first was a penalty (above) which had to be re-taken, but he coolly slotted home. His second was a stunning free-kick over the wall into the top corner, which left Cobh goalkeeper Paul Hunt stranded.
We spoke to Chris after his 2-goal performance. He said, “It was a very tight game, against a good Cobh Ramblers team. What made the victory was our desire to return the changing room with the win.”
“It’s always a pleasure to score goals, after all it’s normal for an attacker to score goals.”
We asked him about his goal from the free-kick, “For my free kick, I tried to hit it so that the ball goes over the wall and drops down. I hit it with lots of power.”
Here is that stunning free-kick;
He’s very happy at the club saying, “I work every day with the team. There is a good atmosphere and a good group. This is important for the group.”
“On the league, it is a very high level with very good teams. It is very physical. Much more physical than in France I think. In France it is more technical and tactical.”
“My ambitions are to go the highest and the furthest possible in football. To play with great teams as well and great players.”
He’s delighted to be in Ireland as he looks to progress his football career. He said, “I decided to come to Athlone because it is important to gain experience when young.”
“Coming here will allow me to show myself in a professional environment, enhance my CV, and of course progress because I think Athlone is a really great club.”
