“That win was coming” said Wexford boss Damien Locke

Unlucky for some, 13 was the magic number for Wexford FC, as they finally won their first league game of the season on Friday night. The 1-0 win was also the first time that Wexford FC won a match in the League Of Ireland, after the club rebranded from Wexford Youths at the beginning of the season.

An early goal from Thomas Croke, who turned home Liam Donnelly’s cross, was enough for Damien Locke’s men to seal a 1-0 win over Shelbourne at Ferrycarrig Park.

As great as the win was, Locke wasn’t surprised, “It’s a result that doesn’t really surprise me I’ve been saying for a number of weeks now that we’ve been the better team in a lot of recent games so it was always coming. But of course it is a relief for a lot of them young lads that have never been in that situation before, so hopefully it’s the first of many now'” he told theleagueofireland.com

We asked him about the changes in line-up. He said, “Yeah, 3 changes to the line up. Graham (Doyle) – who incidentally received an award from the Supporters Club for 151 consecutive appearances from March 2012 to March 2017 – came back into goal after returning from injury. Craig Wall also returned from injury and replaced Eoin Porter as he is unavailable for the coming weeks due to exams. Liam Donnelly replaced Danny Doyle.”

“A 1-0 win in a game for the first time in a number of weeks we didn’t dominate as much as other games is typical.”

“Without controlling the game we still managed to create a number of goal scoring chances which was pleasing, but the defensive work rate was top class. Two or three weeks ago we would’ve lost that game, but this squad has turned a corner and that poor run will only stand to the group because the belief in the dressing room is only growing week on week,” continued Locke.

He’s also looking ahead, “It’s important we kick on, and knowing we have the ability to get more points on the board before the break having already gotten results against Longford and Cobh this season, I expect the boys to be flying.”
