In a surprising move, especially after beating Wexford FC by five goals to nil tonight, Longford Town‘s Alan Mathews has left the club.
The club released the following short statement less than an hour after tonight’s game;
‘Longford Town wish to announce that by mutual consent, the club and First-team manager Alan Mathews have parted ways. We thank Alan for his efforts and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.
Gary Cronin will take charge of the First-team for next week’s game v’s Shelbourne.’
Mathews was in his second spell as manager at the club, following a stint from 2002-2007 when he won two FAI Cups. He returned to the club towards the tail end of last season, replacing Tony Cousins, but after assembling a squad many thought would bring them promotion they’ve struggled for results this season.
