Drogheda United have announced the signing of midfielder Sean Russell from Louisville City. The midfielder is manager Pete Mahon’s first signing of the summer and he joins the Drogs having impressed in yesterday’s friendly defeat to Ipswich.
Russell learned his trade at UCD where he made his league debut in 2010 playing for his father Martin as he established himself as a first-team regular for the Students.
The 23-year-old was on the move in 2014 as he joined First Division side Longford Town before moving to Shelbourne in July where they narrowly missed out on promotion.
He joined Limerick in 2015 where he made 32 league appearances, scoring twice as they suffered relegation via the play-offs before re-signing for the club the following April as they regained promotion back to the Premier Division.
Russell joined USL club Louisville City in January but failed to make an appearance for the club, after struggling to settle in the area. Louisville are coached by fellow-Irishman James O’Connor. O’Connor, a midfielder himself, played for Stoke City, Burnley and Sheffield Wednesday.
With a crucial run of games coming up for the Drogs against their fellow relegation rivals, Mahon is delighted to add Russell’s experience and ability to the squad.
“Sean is a very tidy player who has great experience playing in the league,” Mahon explained on Saturday evening. “He’s been over in America since the turn of the year and we’re very pleased to add him to our squad.”
“His fitness levels aren’t exactly where they need to be at the moment but that’s easy to improve when a player like Sean buys into what we’re trying to do.”
“The most important thing for me is his ability. He loves getting on the ball and never shies away from a challenge and I hope he’ll have a big impact on the remainder of our season.”
