Forgotten Clubs – Cork Bohemians

By Colman Stanley (@ColmnStanley1)

Introduction

‘It was the first appearance in public of the Bohemians eleven, but it was impossible to judge of their merits, as the heavy sod was not by any means in their favour.’

This match report from the Irish Examiner on the 14th of October 1907, from which this quote was taken, describes Cork Bohemian’s first official match, one in which they lost 3-0 at Turner’s Cross to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Fortunes certainly improved for the team from Cork City, as trophies and success would come as the club matured, but this ‘heavy sod’ would eventually return in the form of financial hardship and lead to the demise of the club in the early 1940s. Forgotten Clubs – St James’ s Gate

By Philip O’Rourke (@effect_phil)

If you are into your football quiz questions, then this club could provide you with answers a plenty. Who won the first League of Ireland title? Who won the first FAI Cup? Which famous female boxer played for this club? The answer is the same for each of these questions. Continue reading “Forgotten Clubs – St James’ s Gate”

Forgotten Clubs – Thurles Town FC

By Philip O’Rourke (@effect_phil)

I’ve covered a few clubs around Ireland. Cork, Limerick, Dublin, Kildare, Monaghan, Kilkenny are all counties that have had football clubs represent them at League of Ireland level throughout the years. It would be forgiven, however, if people didn’t associate this county with ‘soccer’. It is after all the home of the GAA, and at the time of writing this their county hurling team have just won their 28th All-Ireland title, following a 3-25 to 0-20 point win over their huge rivals Kilkenny in Croke Park. Forgotten Clubs – Newcastlewest AFC

By Philip O’Rourke (@effect_phil)

Unlike the last club I covered – Brooklyn FC -this next club was much easier to research. That was down to the fact that it still exists today, and are playing in their local league. Continue reading “Forgotten Clubs – Newcastlewest AFC”

Forgotten Clubs: Brooklyn FC

By Philip O’Rourke (@effect_phil)

This club has to be the most difficult one that I have written about in these ‘Forgotten Clubs’ pieces. There are many reasons for this, the fact it went out of existence back in the 1920’s, the lack of fans that are still alive today (If any) and the lack of information about the club itself, even on the internet. Even Wikipedia gave very little into the life of this club. Continue reading “Forgotten Clubs: Brooklyn FC”

Forgotten Clubs – Kildare County

By Philip O’Rourke (@effect_phil)

Some clubs that I will cover in ‘Forgotten Clubs’ won’t have an illustrious history. Some may have been actually forgotten about. This can be said about the next club I am going to write about. Even the mention of this club’s name gets a reaction of, ‘Oh yeah, I forgot they were a League of Ireland club’. But for the fans of that club, it will never be forgotten. Forgotten Clubs – Drumcondra FC

By Philip O’Rourke (@effect_phil)

For the first time we will be venturing into Dublin and looking at one of League of Ireland’s oldest and most successful clubs. Unfortunately, they are no longer present in the modern day League of Ireland but are still around at youth and intermediate level. Not only did this club have to compete with other Dublin clubs but they did it and won, creating history that will always be enshrined in League of Ireland folklore. This, of course is the story of Drumcondra FC. Continue reading “Forgotten Clubs – Drumcondra FC”

Forgotten Clubs – Monaghan United

By Philip O’Rourke (@effect_phil)

Monaghan United, known as ‘The magic Mon’s’, the feature club on the infamous ‘Rod Squad 2’ and the home of the famous Mon-Dog. That’s a lot to take in for relevantly small club. One that, like Kilkenny City AFC, didn’t enjoy much success on the pitch in it’s short time in the League of Ireland. But that didn’t stop it from making history in its own right, nor did it stop the club from creating fantastic memories for some of it’s fans. Here is the story of Monaghan United. Forgotten Clubs – Kilkenny City AFC

By Philip O’Rourke (@effect_phil)

When you hear the name Kilkenny, you automatically think of hurling. It’s like hearing the word wet and thinking water. But what about the other sports that play second fiddle down in the Marble County? A county that once played host to a League of Ireland club for years, unfortunately does not anymore. With a mixed history of highs and lows, here is the story of Kilkenny City AFC. Continue reading “Forgotten Clubs – Kilkenny City AFC”

Forgotten Clubs – Cork Celtic

By Philip O’Rourke (@effect_phil)

They say there is two sides to every story, well in the case of Cork football there are eleven, and I’m about to tell the story of the second one. I got the side of Cork Hibernians FC in my previous article and it painted a picture of just how big the derby game between them and Cork Celtic FC was back in the 60’s and 70’s. Now it’s time to get the point of view from Cork Celtic FC and see if it really was a big deal to them as it was to Cork Hibernians supporters. Continue reading “Forgotten Clubs – Cork Celtic”
